SA’s Binder wins Moto3 race from last position

Brad Binder has been quietly making a name for himself in the Moto3 motorcycle series.

The South African has finished on the podium in the first three races of the season, making quite an impression in the MotoGP feeder series.

However, the fourth race on the calendar, which took place at Jerez this past weekend, was easily his most impressive one yet.

Binder stormed through the field from 35th (and last) position, having been sent to the back for a technical infringement.

“The penalty came as the result of a mapping infringement, the South African’s KTM was found to be using non-homologated ECU software after qualifying,” MotoGP’s website reported.

Binder stormed through the field in the early going, having gone from 35th to 15th by lap three. He would be in the top ten after six laps.

The South African would move into third place on lap 14 and into the lead on the 18th lap of the race.

Binder would open up a 3.4 second lead before winning the race, becoming the first South African to win a race in this class.

The result sees Binder extend his lead in the championship with 77 points to second-placed Jorge Navarro’s 62 points.

The next race in the series takes place at Le Mans on 8 May.
