  • 4 UX principles for creating effective car interfaces

Have you noticed that today’s most buzzed about companies don’t actually own any product? Amazon and Alibaba unite manufacturers; Uber provides transportation services, but doesn't own a single car; Airbnb is a worldwide hotel brand that doesn’t own any of its offered apartments. What unites all these companies? What is the secret to their success? The answer is a buzzing collocation you have definitely heard about: user experience. UX is highly valued by every individual, and something we are willing to pay for. Automotive is one of the most rapidly developing industries, and the last few years have witnessed...

  • SRT’s Tomahawk Vision GT has mind-boggling numbers

The beauty about building a car exclusively for a gaming environment is that you can pretty much throw every single practical real-world consideration out the window. Want proof? Well look no further than the Tomahawk from SRT, the latest manufacturer to produce a special concept for Gran Turismo 6. When the car goes live in-game, the single-seat racer will feature an astonishing 2 590 bhp thanks to a hybrid powertrain combined with wide-angle V-10 with pneumatically driven front wheels. According to Chrysler, the exterior look of the SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo was born from an internal design competition that...

  • Merc teams up with Lufthansa for high tech short-haul business class cabin

If you're wealthy enough to afford the finer things in life, but not wealthy enough to own your own luxury jet, then you might find this concept from Mercedes-Benz and Lufthansa pretty intriguing. The two companies have come together to develop a design for a luxury cabin for short and medium-haul flights, which replaces the ceiling, wall and floor with what the two companies say is a "dynamic, spiral layout". Rather than being separate elements, the companies claim that they flow into each other, as well as the furniture of the cabin. According to a press release from...

  • Volkswagen’s Golf GTE Sport Concept is about as sexy as a golf can get

Volkswagen's having quite a good time in central Europe this week, launching a gaggle of new powertrains at the Vienna Motor Symposium, and now this at its Worthersee Fest. It's called the VW Golf GTE Sport, and its about the most alluring thing to come from the company's stylists since the Scirocco. In many aspects, the GTE Sport concept is a lot like its suave older brother, with a raked roof, oversized doors and massive rear fenders to fit those enormous wheels. And it's not just a striking bridge between "road cars and racing sports cars," notes the company --...

  • Peugeot’s 875HP Vision Gran Turismo virtual racer is here, looks special

If you had the chance to drive an 875bhp car that weighs just 875kg, would you? You might imagine that kind of opportunity might be limited to a select few people around the world. But, as it turns out, all you'll have to do is make sure you have a copy Gran Turismo 6. Okay, you might not actually be able to take the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo out on the road, but you'll be in control of a high performance concept car, albeit one that only exists as bits of data. In the game world, the virtual racer...

  • Volvo’s Lounge Console will change the way billionaires view car interiors [Gallery]

Ever sat in the back of your luxury SUV and bemoaned the fact that most of your view is taken up by the front passenger seat? No? Us neither, but Volvo clearly thinks it's a problem that needed solving. That's why it launched the Lounge Console concept for the XC90 Excellence at the Shanghai International Auto Show earlier this week. Aimed at the very top end of the market, the concept looks more or less as if Volvo's transplanted the first class seat from an airline cabin and stuck in a car. Among the concept layout's features is a...

  • Chevrolet goes balls-to-the-wall crazy with FNR concept

You know how you get some concept cars which are just thinly veiled versions of soon-to-be-unveiled production cars? Well the only way that might be true of the Chevrolet FNR is if the universe you happen to inhabit was created in the fevered imaginings of particularly creative sci-fi futurist. I mean look at it. Somewhere between machine and flying insect, the autonomous concept was unveiled at the Shanhai International Auto Show and was developed by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint venture. Among the many futuristic features on the FNR are crystal laser headlights and taillights, dragonfly dual...

  • Peugeot to launch 500bhp 308 R HYbrid concept

The list of cars to keep an eye on at the upcoming Shanghai International Automobile Show is growing. Whether you're into SUVs, sports cars or hatchbacks, there's plenty to be excited about. When it comes to concepts though, Peugeot just laid a strong claim for having developed the most interesting one to appear at the show. The French automaker has announced that it will be taking a 500bhp all-wheel-drive hatchback to the show. Called the 308 R HYbrid (we have no idea what the capital Y is for either), Peugeot says the car "drives like a supercar". That power...

  • Bonkers design firm plans to stick 550bhp Ferrari engine in a Fiat 500

When it comes to bonkers car projects, we'd have to say that sticking a 550bhp Ferrari engine in the back of a Fiat 500 has to be right up there. It's the kind of thing that seems bound to end in disaster, but it appears that Lazzarini Design is determined to do it. Of course, such a project entails more than just shoving a massive engine in the back and connecting all the relevant pipes. That would explain why Lazzarini's 500 is 350mm wider on the rear part and about 250mm wider in the front, than the stock Fiat. This...

  • Peugeot builds food truck, misses the point of food trucks

As concepts go, the Peugeot Foodtruck is pretty damn practical. As food trucks go however, we're not so sure. Dubbed Le Bistrot du Lion, the restaurant on wheels will take up residence at Milan Design Week 2015 on 14 April, before heading to the French Pavilion at the 2015 World's Fair, Expo Milano, where the theme will be "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." The food truck includes areas for food preparation, dining and refreshments, as well as a DJ booth. In part, it's capable of accommodating all these areas because it comes with its own trailer and in part...

  • Check out Hyundai’s cool cross-over hatch concept

This is pretty nifty. While many of the world's big car makers are launching new models at the New York International Auto Show this week, Hyundai's chosen to release a really promising concept on its home turf. It's called the Enduro and it's more than a little striking. The Korean car maker launched the three door crossover concept at the Seoul Motor Show, also taking place this week. Inspired by the world of motorbike racing, Hyundai claims the Enduro is "the perfect partner for individuals living in the modern city with energetic, athletic lifestyles". Among the new design features...

  • VW intros some fun new Beetles in New York

Volkswagen has rolled out four new versions of the Beetle at the New York International Auto Show. Each of the new models has a different theme, meant to represent a different kind of lifestyle. The Beetle Cabriolet Denim for instance is all about the colour blue. The body color "Stonewashed Blue Metallic" and the soft top in dark blue with a special fabric texture both make a visual reference to jeans. The "Habanero Orange Metallic" Beetle Wave meanwhile is meant to reflect the American spirit on the East and West coast beaches of the USA. Volkswagen says this is...
