  • Virtual racer wins McLaren F1 testing gig

The GT Academy series proved that gamers could be professional sportscar racers, but what about F1? Well, McLaren has crowned the winner of its World's Fastest Gamer contest. The competition resulted in 25-year-old former karting champion Rudy van Buren winning a role as one of McLaren F1's simulator drivers for the 2018 season. McLaren whittled the contestants down from 30 000, eventually hitting 12 for the Finals Week at their Woking headquarters. The week would see contestants driving around the likes of Interlagos, Indianapolis, Circuit de la Sarthe and Suzuka. The deciding round saw van Buren going up against 20-year-old Freek Schothorst in a four hour...

  • McLaren to use 3D printer at F1 races

3D printing has gone from being a crazy phenomenon to a regular part of life in many industries. Now, the McLaren-Honda F1 team has announced that it will be taking a 3D printer to all its races. In a cool touch, the company confirmed that it will be able to print a variety of parts at trackside, courtesy of 3D printing specialists Stratasys, allowing them to quickly and easily produce spares and all-new designs. Parts fabricated with the printer include hydraulic line brackets, radio cables, brake cooling ducts and rear wing flaps. "We are consistently modifying and improving our Formula 1 car...

  • McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Ducati 1199 Superleggera fight for quarter mile supremacy [video]

I'm sure we all have that perfect drag race laid out in our heads. My favourite involves an LMP1 car, a Formula 1 car and a MotoGP machine, but the chaps over at Autocar were a little more realistic. They roped in the world's current hypercar extraordinaires -- the Porsche's 918 hybrid, McLaren's P1 hybrid and Ducati's ultra-exclusive 1199 Superleggera superbike against the quarter-mile clock. The publication allegedly reached out to Ferrari to include its LaFerrari in the race, but the Italian marque declined to provide a car. It does however, sound like a foregone conclusion right? I mean, the McLaren...

  • McLaren Special Ops division produces a very special 650S coupe concept

It's difficult to look at the 650S coupe concept from McLaren's Special Operations division and not imagine it growling aggressively at you. The car, which is set to be shown off across China over the coming weeks, is meant to illustrate some of the upgrades the division can provide to the standard 650S Coupe and 650S Spider. The British-based motoring company says that the concept has a "stealth-like, menacing appearance" and for once we agree with the PR spin. Between the metallic black paint with red flecks and the satin-finished carbon fibre highlights, the 650S concept looks like it's...

  • 5 of the geekiest cars set to debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show

Each year Geneva kicks off the motoring show season in style. It isn't the first of the year, but it certainly contends for the best and most glamorous. It's where many of the top manufacturers have their chance to show off their most prized metal manifestations and is also the best chance the public has to view these beauties up close and personal. This year is no different to any other as there are plenty of drool-worthy debuts to wait for, some of which have been shown below. But that's also the fun about motor shows, especially the big,...

  • 5 cars that redefined the term ‘geeky’ in 2013

2013 saw its fair share of technologically advanced cars revealed and launched. Electric and hybrid cars were a major theme, marking out the mass movement of manufacturers to alternative energy vehicles. More importantly though, the year saw a huge range of cars being unveiled which would make any geek weak at the knees. Some were just concepts meant to amaze, like Mercedes’ AMG Vision Gran Turismo, others were there to show off just one new and amazing technology like the Volvo self-parking car and others to show what is coming along in a few years’ time, like the Bentley...

  • Here’s everything you need to know about the Lamborghini Huracán

Having had the current version of the ‘baby Lambo’, the Gallardo, on the market for almost 10 years, Lamborghini needed to update the range to take on rivals like the Ferrari 458 Speciale, McLaren 12C and 991 Porsche 911. This is it. The Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4. The Huracán, named after a Spanish bull and a word that means ‘hurricane’ has an aggressive, angular design whose silhouette "was born out of the desire of creating an automobile, whose profile is defined by only one line that merges the front with the cockpit and the rear of the car." Looking at it,...

  • McLaren reveals the dangerously powerful P1 engine

High horsepower outputs are all the rage these days; with hatchbacks boasting 300bhp and saloons 500bhp; hearing about supercars with astronomical power outputs is not new. But when you hear the power figure McLaren says its P1 will have, you can’t help but smile. McLaren isn't messing about with this car, it’s out for blood. Nine-hundred and three. That’s how many. And if you have to ask ‘what’, then you shouldn't know. Sure, there are cars with more power, like the all-conquering Bugatti Veyron, but there’s something about a McLaren with 903bhp that tickles my senses. It’s probably because of...
